people obviously done a lot. governor romney was a classic example i give away millions of dollars. >> what about special rates for capital gains, dividends, other things that particularly benefit the wealthy are in town? >> is the classic home break that benefits the very wealthy. they think is correct that they receive more than 90% of the benefits. people in the middle class get a little bit from the outbreak, but overwhelmingly, the majority goes to the wealthy. >> home tax loopholes alone can't solve the fiscal cliff even if you'd done been the biggest tax loopholes. they don't come close to fulfilling the deficit. how significant are these deductions when we look at their role in the big picture of solving the fiscal clef? >> they can be important, the goal is not to get rid of the budget deficit. i don't think anybody has a realistic hope of getting rid of the budget deficit and a lot of people don't want to get rid of the budget deficit. certainly, opinions differ. they can be a managing part of the deficit. >> do they play a role in negotiations and talks? there is a group

in fact not the subject at all at the republican convention in tampa in august. as mitt romney was trying to win the presidentee again, george w. bush was really a recluse. i think now that the election is over the republicans lost. he wants to have a role in one of his causes. immigration is a passion he shares with his brother jeb, former governor of florida who is thinking of his own political future and possibly a white house run and wants to help in the reset of the republican party which will include taking a serious look at actually finally engaging on immigration reform. jon: fair to say hispanics did not exactly flock to mitt romney this time around. george w. bush did pretty well with them both four years ago and eight years ago. >> reporter: very well, he got about 41% in his last election, that is a number republicans are going to have to meet in order to win the demographics of a presidential run and get a coalition that gets you the map to win the white house. 71-27, which it was this time is not going to get you the white house. you have to be upwards of 40%, possibly in fu

of the election there. the mitt romney people pretty much told a lot of us they were confident it was going to be a long night and that they would win. i want to read you something from the new republic about team romney's internal polling. says the biggest flaw in their polling was the failure to predict the demographic composition of the electorate. the people who showed up to vote on november 6 were younger and less white than team romney anticipated and far more democratic as a result. so i want to ask you, erick, is this sort of a misunderstanding generally that republicans have to address the next time they go into an election about who the voters are going to the polls? >> oh, i don't think it's just a republican problem. i think if you look at rasmussen, gallup and a number of other pollsters out there, they all got it wrong. i think i was one of the few people on the right saying the polls weren't wrong and e vis rated by friends for saying that. at some point you have to realize the data's not lying. >> let me just say, i want to sort of unravel that a bit. we know gallup certainl

, for five minutes. mr. blumenauer: mr. speaker, mitt romney weathered a storm of criticism late in the campaign after hurricane sandy for his earlier comments about privatizing fema and turning responsibility back to state and local governments. but during an era of fiscal restraint and global warming, it's high time that we start this conversation in earnest. how big do you want your fema to be? how generous your disaster relief payments and how much do you want to pay for it? in today's "new york times" op-ed section, there's an article that points out potential liability for flood insurance alone is $1.25 trillion. second only to the liability for social security. right now we have arguably the worst of both worlds. the federal government responds to disaster usually paying too much for the wrong people to do the wrong things. we provide federal money to put people back in harm's way and sometimes provide infrastructure to make future risky development worse. we often take remedial action, like for theifying beaches, a temporary solution, that can actually accelerate erosion

this picture of mitt romney shopping at costco in california and a dark hat and dark sunglasses. they did not agree on much in the presidential race, but it's clear mitt romney and joe biden share a love of bargains, both of them shopping at costco recently. and the baltimore sun has this headline on their front page -- the storm caused $127 million of damage in maryland. now to republican caller in california, sandy. caller: i just went through an experience with my mother who went from the hospital to a nursing home and was told she could not have any rehabilitation services, that she was only allowed to stay in the nursing home seven days. then we had to make arrangements with hospice. they will all the paper that seven days. and she has to pay for everything else honor own. if hospice came to her house, she will have to pay. she paid into medicare many years. i think all seniors need to be aware and be prepared that this is what will happen to them. that's my experience. host: in philadelphia, rick is a democratic caller. caller: i cannot believe i got through. the last time i spoke w

romney, and he asked them what they thought about the fiscal cliff. take a look. >> time to sharpen your pencils and get over yourselves. >> be realistic and stop being political. >> i think they're all -- because they're not getting together. don't be democrats, don't be republicans. they're american citizens. work together to get the work done. >> so that's the clear message, wolf. you understand there was a huge gender gap for democrats in this last elections. republicans have to look at that and say, okay, we have to get something done. but let me add this. when peter hart actually laid out on the table here are the choices you have to make on spending and here are the choices you have to make on taxes, they had a little bit more difficult time in deciding what to do. so they began to realize the extent of the difficulty in cutting any real deal. >> yeah. not belittling the difficulty. these are tough, tough issues. but the stakes are really, really important right now. there is a little wiggle room. >> yeah. >> as far as the president and the democrats are concerned when it comes to
